The club set more than one trap for Tessa and me, Chief being the link that got them to her and Rick being the lucky wolf who picked the right spot and lay in wait for me the longest. Wherever the others might have been, all their plans led to exactly where we ended up. A defensible and isolated stretch of road peppered with escape routes and littered with bikes connected to me, their new patch-in. If the stash had been found, especially the ones they broke out of impound after Chief picked them up, I was the only wolf on the hook.

The only other thing I’m sure of is that Rick came on strong, but he wasn’t looking for the kill. Randy’s doing. A decision I’m sure my new leader isn’t firm on. I’m not firm on my decision to be riding along behind him either, but the club is currently our best shot at survival. I can handle Beth. If she’s dumb enough to come for either of us, she’s going to die feeling what Teresa felt when that little girl lost her life. But shaking loose of the club while avoiding the law and the strays isn’t something I’m physically capable of right now, if I ever could manage such a feat to begin with.

I race behind Randy’s bike, toward the lights I looked at from this same patch of woods not long ago. Tessa’s arms are wrapped tightly around me, the occasional twitch of her fingers against my stomach relaying her fear. I stick close to the dust Randy is kicking up. There’s no stopping at the edge of the pavement to scour the parking lot of Town’s End. We roll across the pavement and straight through the open doors of my largest bay, Carl standing there waiting for us.

I skid my bike to a stop and pull Tessa off it. She moves toward Randy. I rake a hand through her hair and tug it into my first. “Not just yet. We have some things to talk about.”

I give her hair a good yank for spite. Her eyes shoot daggers through me but she clamps her mouth shut and comes where I lead. The last bike skids past us. Shaun jumps off the back. “This way, Gripr.”

I keep stomping across the floor, away from where Carl is closing the bay door and past where Randy and the others are heading up the stairs to my office. “You go whatever direction you want. Straight down into hell would be a good one. But give me your gun before you go, it would be a shame to lose a piece like that.”

“Shh,” Tessa hisses, halfheartedly fighting my grip on her hair.

I veer toward the partition in the back of the garage. “I’ll shush once you agree to all the groveling you’re going to be doing for years to come. Maybe for the rest of our lives because you have a lot of memories to wash out of my head.
